Hydrodynamic approach to cosmic ray propagation II. Nonlinear test particle picture in a shocked background

چکیده
In this article, cosmic ray acceleration is studied in a nonlinear test particle picture in the hydrodynamic approach. The model includes cosmic rays and two oppositely propagating Alfvén waves. It is a nonlinear model because the interactions between the cosmic rays, waves and background plasma depend on the waves themselves. The background is a simple fast shock. Besides the parameters characterising the nonlinear test particle picture, two more parameters are required for the shock, namely, the compression ratio and the location of the shock. In a uniform super-Alfvénic background cosmic rays can be accelerated. When the downstream of the background undergoes a fast shock transition, the cosmic ray may be accelerated further. We find that the cosmic ray energy flux far downstream remains unchanged when a shock is introduced. We define the efficiency of shock acceleration in terms of the difference in far downstream cosmic ray pressure between a uniform background and a shocked background with the same far upstream pressure. Depending on the parameters, the efficiency can take positive and negative values. It is possible that the cosmic ray pressure far downstream of the shock may be less than the pressure without the shock. We also comment on the role of the shock in accelerating particles.

متن کاملThe Cosmic Ray – X-ray Connection: Effects of Nonlinear Shock Acceleration on Photon Production in SNRs
Cosmic-ray production in young supernova remnant (SNR) shocks is expected to be efficient and strongly nonlinear. In nonlinear, diffusive shock acceleration, compression ratios will be higher and the shocked temperature lower than test-particle, Rankine-Hugoniot relations predict. Furthermore, the heating of the gas to X-ray emitting temperatures is strongly coupled to the acceleration of cosmi...
متن کاملTime Delays in Cosmic Ray Propagation
Cosmic Rays (CR) travel at speeds essentially indistinguishable from the speed of light. However whilst travelling through magnetic fields, both regular and turbulent, they are delayed behind the light since they are usually charged particles and their paths are not linear. Those delays can be so long that they are an impediment to correctly identifying sources which may be variable in time. Fu...

We treat the problem of adiabatic losses and stochastic particle acceleration in gamma-ray burst (GRB) blast waves that decelerate by sweeping up matter from an external medium. The shocked fluid is assumed to be represented by a homogeneous expanding shell. The energy lost by nonthermal particles through adiabatic expansion is converted to the bulk kinetic energy of the outflow, permitting the...

We give a review of cosmic ray propagation models. It is shown that the development of the theory of cosmic ray origin leads inevitably to the conclusion that cosmic ray propagation in the Galaxy is determined by effective particle scattering, which is described by spatial diffusion. The Galactic Disk is surrounded by an extended halo, in which cosmic rays are confined before escaping into inte...
